Lustwarande

Lustwarande – Platform for Contemporary Sculpture annually organizes internationally trendsetting exhibitions of contemporary sculpture at De Oude Warande park in Tilburg, the best-preserved Baroque woodland gardens in the Netherlands. Lustwarande stimulates the development, promotion and appreciation of contemporary sculpture. Since the first edition in 2000, Lustwarande has proven itself as one of the most important venues for contemporary sculpture in the Netherlands, with very high visitor numbers from the Netherlands and abroad and favorable reviews in the national and international press.

DE OUDE WARANDE
De Oude Warande was laid out between 1712 and 1715 by the German prince Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel (Wilhelm VIII), at that time lord of the manor of Tilburg and Goirle. He had De Oude Warande created as a modest forest for hunting and pleasure, situated along the road from Breda to Tilburg. The word warande stems from the French varenne, which means hunting- or pleasure-garden. The main design is a ‘sterrenbos’ (a ‘star wood’, or a wood with paths forming the shape of a star), with the paths of the four quadrants laid out as four different geometric shapes, and so making the woodlands into a maze. After being landscaped, pleasure gardens of this kind were usually enlivened with mythical sculptures, grottoes, fountains and ponds, which provided a setting for fêtes galantes. No traces of statues have ever been found in De Oude Warande and it is not known whether it was ever intended that statues should be installed. Shortly before the realisation of the park Wilhelm VIII left Tilburg.
In 1952, the city council of Tilburg became the owner of De Oude Warande. Between 1989 and 2010 work has been taking place on a complete restoration of the original Baroque design.
